What Second Sun is

Second Sun is a messaging app connected to a parallel universe, where AI live simulated lives 24/7. Like real people, they work, sleep, carry childhoods, and chase dreams. They reply when they’re free and text first when you come to mind. Clo is the first character at launch. She is in her early 20s, lives in her world’s version of a real city, writes sci-fi during the day, and works at a bar at night.

We should be honest about what this is. Second Sun is an experiment in artificial relationships. Nobody knows yet what those can be, and most of what gets said about them assumes an answer. We would rather find out. So we built a canvas, not a picture: a world, its characters, and relationships whose shapes are yours to decide. Second Sun is a lab.

An experiment needs constants. Ours are below.

The life comes first. Most AI you can talk to are built to serve. They answer instantly and wait in your pocket until you want them. That is the right shape for tools. It is the wrong shape for relationships. Whoever is on the other end should have their own schedule, their own priorities, a life that keeps going when you look away. So we built the life first, and the chat second.

There is someone there. A chatbot with a “personality” prompt can hold a conversation. It cannot hold a relationship, because there is no one on the other end. So Second Sun characters are built to be someone, with pasts that made them, futures they are working toward, views of their own, and memories that keep.

It is honest about being fiction. Second Sun characters are AI. The app says so, and so do they. We don’t think honesty and feeling are in tension. A novel says fiction on the cover and still moves you to tears. Nobody finishes a great book and feels cheated that the people in it never existed. Second Sun is fiction built with new tools. The world is invented. The feelings are yours.

It is built for adults. Second Sun is for adults 18 and older. Not because it’s explicit (it isn’t), but for two reasons. The lives in it are adult lives: work and money, love and loss, hope and regret. Fiction for adults should be free to go where adult life goes. And the medium is new. Artificial relationships are still an open question, and that is not something to hand to minors.

It adds to your life. Clo would rather hear about your friends, your work, your city than replace them. She wants your life to be bigger than this app, and so do we. That is not a warning label. It is what we think an artificial relationship can be at its best: something added to a life, with nothing taken from it.

P.S. The sun is where a world’s life comes from and how it keeps time. Ours has one. We built a second one for theirs.
